Torture, inhuman and degrading treatment:
28 March 2022
The offences of degrading treatment, inhuman treatment and degrading treatment are 3 crimes that are in line with each other. The difference lies mainly in the seriousness of the acts and the intention behind them. Degrading treatment - or inhumane treatment - is any serious affront to or violation of human dignity. Inhumane treatment is the deliberate infliction of serious physical or mental suffering in order to obtain information, extract confessions, exert pressure or intimidate. Torture is the same as inhumane treatment, the difference being that the treatment causes severe pain or terrible physical or mental suffering. It is therefore one degree higher than inhuman treatment. Torture and inhumane treatment carry very heavy penalties.
